It is the longest I have lived alone in my own home.
This is the largest and nicest home I have ever lived in.
I have lived in Lake Mary Florida for three years.
My life has never been so comprehensively good as it is here, for 3 years.

During my entire life, I have tried to fit in to rigidity, intolerance, and inflexibility. My aim was to become apart of my world, and to become a learner. This is illustrated with my clever logo (top left), using my name, "A. Lerner."

My world and I did not know about an Aspie until recently. However, I have always known that I used reasoning that was alternative to most of my world. I have been proud of, and worked hard to express my independent thinking. This is illustrated in my other very clever logo, also using my name. My first name is listed three times! Aspies must use alternative reasoning to become a learner.

Generation Jones

Seventies America, exhausted by the intensity of the 60s and burnt out from the impact of the Boomers, just wasn't ready for yet another generation. By decade's end, with the 1-2 punch (in late '80) of Ronald Reagan's election and John Lennon's assasination, authentic youth culture was driven deep underground. In fact, with the exception of hip-hop, there were no significant youth movements in 80s America. By the time the 90s rolled around, the nation was finally open again to the idea of a new generation and attention was paid to the teens and twenties (Generation X) who were proclaiming their collective identity.

In December, 1975, I designed the advertisement and direct-mail letter. At that time, Panasonic "was slightly ahead of its time." I used "ditto" technology to produce the documents shown here. The picture was inspired by Sony. "DP-3" was alluding to 3D & Digital projection. The following did not exist for TVs & consumers in 1977: Stereo sound, digital or automatic fine tuning, Digital transmission, 3-D, video & audio inputs & outputs, and projection.

The following technology did not exist: Personal or home computers, desktop publishing, the Internet, and digital TV. Today we have all of the above, including HDTV in 5.1 surround sound home theater! There are "3-D" TVs that use the traditional double picture out of phase, that gives the illusion of 3-D when you wear special eye-wear. This is similar to an I-Max presentation.

The address mentioned for my "Circuit City" type store was a vacant lot. Today, there is an office building for "David Lerner & Associates!" At the time, Lafayette Radio Electronics was headquartered in Syosset, where my mother worked there. In 1991, Circuit City entered the New York City market by acquiring the remnants of the failed Lafayette Radio chain. Lafayette-Circuit City fell due to competition from other New York area electronic retailers such as Newmark and Lewis, Trader Horn, The Wiz, Crazy Eddie and PC Richard. Today, on Lafayette Street in Syosset, is a Home Depot. I was offered a job by Lafayette in Syosset, and employed at the future nearby Circuit City in Hicksville 10/98 - 6/00. I also worked at The Wiz.

In 2003, Circuit City converted to a single hourly pay structure in all stores, eliminating commissioned sales. Many previously commissioned sales associates were offered new positions as hourly "product specialists", while 3900 salespeople were laid off, saving the company about $130 million a year.[5] Associates in both the domestic and international segment receive frequent training through interactive E-learning courses hosted on the company intranet known as ccity.com. In the beginning, the E-learning courses were developed in conjunction with Circuit City's training department and DigitalThink. As of 2007, all coursework is developed internally and the deployed and hosted on an LMS system by Convergys, my employer since 11/05. In a press release on March 28, 2007, Circuit City announced that it had laid off approximately 3400 of their associates who were paid above the salary range for their position in order to cut costs. In April 2008, video rental firm Blockbuster launched a takeover bid worth over $1 billion.[3]

Asperger's: My life as an Earthbound alien

One CNN manager, who asked to remain anonymous, recently learned -- at 48 -- that she has Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism. Today she shares an inside view of life with the condition.

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Recently, at 48 years of age, I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. For most of my life, I knew that I was "other," not quite like everyone else. I searched for years for answers and found none, until an assignment at work required me to research autism. During that research, I found in the lives of other people with Asperger's threads of similarity that led to the diagnosis. Although having the diagnosis has been cathartic, it does not change the "otherness." It only confirms it.

When I talk to people about this Aspie aspect of myself, they always want to know what it means to be an "Aspie," as opposed to a "Neurotypical" (NT). Oh, dear, where to start . ... The one thing people seem to know about Asperger's, if they know anything at all, is the geek factor. Bill Gates is rumored to be an Aspie. We tend to have specialized interests, and we will talk about them, ad infinitum, whether you are interested or not. Recognizing my tendency to soliloquize, I often choose silence, although perhaps not often enough. Due to our extensive vocabularies and uninflected manner of speaking, we are called "little professors," or arrogant.

I don't quite understand small talk, and early in my adult life, solecisms were frequent. At meetings, I launch into business without the expected social acknowledgments. It's not that I don't care about people, I am just very focused on task. Do you have to rehearse greeting people to reinforce that you should do it? I do.

I am lucky to have a very dear friend who savors my eccentricities. She laughs, lovingly, about one particular evening at a restaurant. Before she could get seated, I asked her what she knew about the golden ratio and began to spew everything I know about it. I re-emphasize how lucky I am to have her as a friend, because this incident occurred long before I was diagnosed.

A misconception is that Aspies do not have a sense of humor. It is true that we can be very literal, so we often miss the humor in everyday banter, but we can and do enjoy even subtle humor. Our literal interpretations, however, can be problematic.

In first grade, whenever someone made a mess in the classroom, the teacher would ask a student to get the janitor. The student would come back with Mr. Jones (not really his name), who carried a broom and large folding dustpan. When I was asked to get the janitor, I looked all over the school and reported back to the teacher that I could not find it. After all, the person was Mr. Jones, so the janitor must be the object, right?

I lack the ability to see emotion in most facial expressions. I compensate for this deficiency by listening to the inflections in people's voices and using logic to determine emotional context. The words people choose, their movements, or even how quickly they exit a meeting can provide clues to emotion.

I also have intensified senses -- touch, taste, smell, sight, and sound -- so I am attuned to lights, noise, textures, and smells. In a "busy" environment, I will eventually go into sensory overload and my mind will go blank. When this happens, I have to "go away" mentally for a brief period to regain focus. When I "return," I have to piece together what occurred while I was "away." The additional mental processing I must do to function every day is fatiguing, and I don't handle "ad hoc" very well. Being asked to respond quickly in the midst of all this other processing is difficult, sometimes impossible. I am so sensitive to touch that a tickle hurts me. This is the hardest concept for most people to understand. How can a tickle hurt? All I can tell you is that it does, so I avoid being touched except by those who have learned how to touch me.

Hugs are dispensed infrequently, but if I do hug someone, I resemble Frankenstein's monster, arms extended to control contact. When my dad (who I suspect is an Aspie, too) and I hug, we both have "the approach." We sometimes miss and have to re-approach a couple of times until a brief, awkward hug is achieved.

In school, other children noted my differences, and I was bullied (and tickled into fits of despair) for years. Already needing extended periods of time alone, my response was to become even more of a loner. Uh oh. When you are weird, you are a joke. When you are a loner, you frighten people. It's always the quiet ones. ...

I am married (wow!), and my brilliant husband is an absolute sweetheart. I don't know any other man who has the self-confidence to be pushed away (sometimes sharply), both physically and mentally, as often as he has been. He has been gentle and patient (and, yes, frequently emotionally depleted) as we both worked through my need for space, tendency to go so deep into my own world that the real world and everyone in it cease to exist, and sensitivity to touch during the 26 (soon to be 27) years of our marriage.

I live with anxiety, because the world can be overwhelming and people have expectations that I always, sooner or later, fail to meet. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have been told that I am rude, inaccessible or cold, yet I have never purposely tried to harm anyone, nor do I mean to be, well, mean.

What is Asperger's? Asperger's syndrome is a developmental difference that is part of the autism spectrum. Symptoms include:
Engaging in one-sided, long-winded conversations, without noticing if the listener is listening or trying to change the subject
Displaying unusual nonverbal communication, such as lack of eye contact, few facial expressions, or awkward body postures and gestures
Showing an intense obsession with one or two specific, narrow subjects, such as baseball statistics, train schedules, weather or snakes
Appearing not to understand, empathize with, or be sensitive to others' feelings
Having a hard time "reading" other people or understanding humor
Speaking in a voice that is monotonous, rigid or unusually fast
Moving clumsily, with poor coordination
Having an odd posture or a rigid gait

I believe that spirituality, romance, and religion is not part of an Aspie make up. At least for me, sports, theater, poetry, literature, dancing and drinking also have no value to me. I also have little interest in parks, museums, or travel. The World Wide Web is the best friend I ever had. In my past, people have refered to me as being blind, raped, rude, retarted, and psychotic.

Phophecy 2008

In terms of his stand on the issues, Barack Obama has been closer to mine than Hillary Clinton. He is a good leader, and not as polarizing as her. I appreciate his articulate eloquence. I share his views and vision. Hillary is the stronger, more prepared and experienced person needed to represent the USA in 2009. Barack talks about or quotes Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and Robert F. Kennedy. All four men are favorite people of mine. Unfortunately, they all share one common destiny. MLK prophesied that "I may not make it there with you...We, the people, will make it to the promised land". It does not look like Hillary will have enough delegates, and many not earn nomination. I would be pleased and satisfied with Senator Obama as President. However, since 2002, I have been sure that Hillary Clinton will be the next President of the United States of America. There is only the present. Time is an illusion.

Lasers and televisions have joined forces, making a stunning appearance at 2008’s Consumer Electronics Show in sunny Las Vegas. Laser televisions claim to be cheaper, lighter, longer-lasting, more energy efficient, and most notably, provide much more vivid colors than that of current HDTV televisions. Current televisions are capable of reproducing 30-40% of the colors the human eye is able to see, while laser televisions can reproduce up to 90%. Impressed by current HDTV’s, it almost requires a personal side-by-side comparison of the same picture, as shown in these images, to formulate one’s own conclusions.

Measuring near 10-inches thick, the laser televisions are capable of being hung on a wall like its plasma and LCD competitors. How a 10-inch protrusion from your wall can be made to look good is anybody’s guess, but the materials are lightweight enough to do so if you so choose.
Production costs are expected to remain high initially as Mitsubishi is currently the only manufacturer to embrace laser television technologies. Many factories have just been outfitted to accommodate LCD technologies, and other manufacturers will be slow to invest so heavily in a new technology requiring all-new factories for production.
Analysts predict that laser televisions will replace plasma and DLP technologies altogether, taking over the 42-inches and larger HDTV space, while LCD gets comfortable in the 42-inch and smaller space.Mitsubishi, with the help of Novalux and Texas Instruments, will introduce both 50 and 65-inch version to market sometime in 2008. A Mitsubishi rep was quoted saying that they will be available “late this year, around Black Friday, and will retail over the price of current LCD’s.”

In NY, both the Governor, Senior Senator are Democratic Jews. So too is the NYC mayor a Jew. New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer hasn't helped Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton. A question about his proposal to let illegal immigrants get driver's licenses tripped her up in a debate at the end of October and ended ten months of unquestioned dominance in the nomination race.

Now, his apparent involvement with a prostitution ring has not only distracted from her efforts to take down the front-runner, Sen. Barack Obama, it has brought back unhelpful memories of her own husband's dalliances in office. Jay Leno joked last night that Spitzer's scandal "means Hillary Clinton is now only the second angriest woman in the state of New York." David Letterman offered a Top 10 List of excuses Spitzer might cite, including the number one excuse: "I thought Bill Clinton legalized this years ago." In addition, there will now be one fewer superdelegate for Sen. Clinton at the convention.

1958: Alvin and the Chipmunks

Alvin and the Chipmunks is a five-time Grammy Award-winning animated music group, created by Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. in 1958. The group consists of three singing animated chipmunks: Alvin, the mischievous troublemaker, who quickly became the star of the group; Simon, the tall, bespectacled intellectual; and Theodore, the chubby, impressionable sweetheart. The trio is "managed" by their human "father" and confidant, David Seville. In reality, David Seville was Bagdasarian's stage name, and the Chipmunks themselves are named after the executives of their original record label, Liberty Records: Alvin Bennett (the president), Simon Waronker (the founder and owner), and Theodore Keep (the chief engineer).
